Letter To The Wizard: Dear Donna
My parents often visited the Midgets Club and received Christmas Cards from the owners, married munchkins. I believe their names were Parnell and Mary Ellen. Parnell might have been their last name. The husband has died but I believe Mary Ellen is still living in Illinois. How old is she ?

Don,
November 25, 2005

You're right on all counts. I can't give you her phone number but I can give you her address. You ask how old she is. LOL 6300 West 63rd. Street, Chicago, Ill. 60638. Hope this helps.

: WOW! What a great website! I am a huge Wizard of Oz fan. A movie that was filmed way before it's time. I am a also a huge Judy Garland fan as well.

Amy
November 13th, 2005

Thank you for the compliment. It has been a labor of love but a great deal of work too. I don't know about before it's time, as it was filmed in 1938. The technology was just barley available and this was the first color
picture that MGM produced.

The other new technology was invented by MGM studios and much of that is still in use today in a higher more proficient form.

Glad you enjoyed the web site and the film.

Hello I have no questions but I would like to say that
your website is beautiful. I cannot possibly imagine all the hours it has
taken you to create such a masterpiece. I love the Wizard of Oz as I am sure
so many trillions of others do I would like to thank you for creating such a
devotional and meaningful site.

Dear Donnie:

How nice of you to compliment in such glowing terms the work and love that
has gone into this site. It has new things added to it often and as a member
of the original cast even I am amazed at the response I receive from all the
Ozies that have fallen in love with the fairy tale of L Frank Baum's book.
Continue to enjoy and you need to thank my Webmaster for the great job
he does in putting this information on the World Wide Web for all to share.

Sincerely,

I am doing a project on the Wizard of Oz. If you could, will you send me the email addresses of the munchkins who are still alive or their agents? I you could, that would be great. Also, can you give me some information on the Wizard of Oz?
Thanks!

Lauryn
April 18th, 2005

Dear Lauryn:

All the other Munchkin's are not computer literate so they don't own one. If you will
look at the opening page of this Web site all the questions are answered there for
you about all who are alive and active. (Nine only) As for the Oz story on the same
first page there is a link that says "OZ INFORMATION. Click on it. There are dozens
and dozens of pages about everything you could possibly want to know. It will probably
consume days of your time to read all of it. I can't not nor will I spoon feed you all of this
information when its there for the reading.

Thanks for your questions. Enjoy the information.

Letter To The Wizard
:
Hey...I've been very interested in the rumor about the munchkin who hung himself...it does look like a bird flapping it's wings, but i saw another picture on the internet. It was in the scene where dorothy gets into the carriage with the munchkins and they are singing; We thank you.... The munchkin in the back dissapears in two pictures. I read that the munchkin got fired that day, his girlfriend dumped him, and his grandma died. I think the munchkin might have dissapeared to go hang himself in the tinman scene...( I think you know what scene I'm talking about..) Well, Im renting the movie to check everything. Thanks

Lindsey
November 22nd, 2004

Lindsey: Movies are made in sections on different sound stages. Because of a
one director to do the whole film, well, at least one at a time, it is not possible for a Munchkin to diasappear to another set to hang himself while the Emerald City scenes are being shot. The limits are not only the director but the camera man and the scheduling of personal to be in different parts of the film. To make matters worse the film is not shot in sequence .They are not shot in and in Oz the first set used in this film was the witches castle. So what you are proposing is just not possible.

Lindsey this partiticular question is at least on my site 6 times in different places. NO HANGING OF ANYONE~~ no one DIED on THE SET. What is seen in the back ground was a cranes wings. There were wild exotic animals all over the sets. It's just the wing of a crane. If you don't believe me get any book from the library
and read it on the making of Oz and it will tell you the same thing that I am. NO ONE DIED! NO ONE HUNG THEMSELVES. Read the page under the title "Did you Know" on my 'Oz information' site. It tells all about it. Please don't keep repeating this nasty rumor. It just isn't so. http://www.kansasoz.com/infodidyouknow.htm

Ozzily yours,
Donna Stewart-Hardway

Letter To The Wizard
: Is it true that there is a hanging midget in the movie. Iif there is why isn't anybody smart enough to have a picture with a circle around the so called midget who hung himself. If you do have a idea were I can get to see this tell me please or send the picture with a circle a round it.

Patricia
September 21st, 2004

Dear Patricia,

1. No hanging ever took place, ie, therefore no such picture exists.
2. What you see is the wing of a large bird.
3. Oz had a variety of animals on the sets that comprised the trip to the Emerald City.
4. See this Web page on my site about this and other oddities.

Billie Burke was born in 1886 and died at 86 years old in 1970. I believe that if you

: What is the Wizard's full name?

Elaine
September 1st, 2004

Dear Elaine:

Your question is not very clear but as far as the part that Frank Morgan
played in this one role in the movie he was just called the Wizard of Oz. He also played Professor Marvel, the gate keeper in the Emerald City.
Additionally, he also played the Cabby and a soldier in the Emerald city. That is just the movie which is quite different from the book. If this does not answer your question, read under the information of Oz on my site
about the Frank Morgan himself and see if that helps.

Thanks for writing the Wizard. Which in this instance is Donna Stewart-Hardway.

Letter To The Wizard: Wizard of Oz fan (of course). I've always wanted to attend Chesterton festival and am planning on it for the 1st time this year. Q: How many original cast members are living? Their name and role? Thanks! (Looking forward to seeing you in Sept.)

Donna
August 31st, 2004

Dear Donna:

Thanks for writing to the Wizard. This information is all on my Web Site under Oz Information. If you will check under the Munchkins and then the Acknowledgements you can see who played what and if they are still alive. Basically there are 11 Little people with 5 sometimes 6 active ones. The others are too old and ill to manage personal appearances. There are 3 children still around and I am the only one that goes to the festivals.

: Hi Donna!

My goodness Sis... Whenever I think I have read your entire site I find a new piece and learn something else. Today's thrill was reading all about Tim and learning he too is a Hammond resident! Well you know that sure got my mind a thinkin' lol.

I was compelled to write The Wizard to thank her (you) once again for all the hard work you've done here at your site, for educating us every chance you get on the wonders of OZ, for all you've done for my Friends_In_OZ yahoo group during your past year of membership. The dedication to fans you prove at EVERY OZ Event--- Let others rush you through an autograph line, not Donna. She truly understands how special festival time is to fans and will give you your moment!

Donna has so many special talents--- From her exclusive Munchkin Made items, to the way she can tell a story. I still chuckle when I think of Donna descibing the monkey-drop at the Chesterton Festival! Donna's heart is just a big as can be too and that is by far her most special talent to me. If someone needs inspiration Donna is there to guide you. She always adopting someone... Shoot! that is how I came to be her Sister! lol

So thanks for all the hard work and dedication Donna. Even though we don't say it often enough we DO appreciated all you do! I love you Sis!

Thanks for giving back more than you take!

My dearest and only sister:

You are so special to me too. I can't thank you enough for your kind words and heaped compliments. If you are going to write this kind of letter to me then you have to supply the kleenex to catch my tears as they fall. I used to cry many years ago as I had no brother or sister to call my own. But, now I have you and that feels so good you'll never know.

You made my day Marianne, sister of mine.

Hello,
I just found your website. I am amazed that there are still munchkins from the original movie alive and attending festivals and doing stuff with OZ still. Our theatre is getting ready to Wizard of Oz this summer. Do you know if
any of the munchkins still alive have ever guest appeared in any theatre productions of the Wizard of Oz. If any of them do we would love to have some one guest appear in ours. Please let me know. Thanks

Tracey
April 27th, 2003

Dear Tracey:

Thank you for your letter. I suppose that it would seem a surprise that some of us are still around that were in the original film. It is true that a few of us do appear occasionally in a reprise of Oz. Last December myself and two others were in a production in Buffalo, NY. However there is a charge and transportation, food and lodging are also involved above our fees. If you are still interested please let me know and this can be discussed in detail.

I appreciate you writing and please try to get to one of the festivals this year. They are really wonderful. Chesterton, IN hosts about 100,000 people the second weekend in September.

Thanks for your comments.

Dear Mara:
Thank you so much for writing to the Wizard and letting everyone know how much you love the "Wizard of Oz".

Letter To The Wizard: I want you to know how much this film has brought joy to my family, and now it has been passed on to my own family. I can remember when I was a child 38 years ago and mom popped the corn for the movie in the fall. I am an avid believer and going to attend my second festival in Chesterton, Indiana. I recently went to the Toto Fest in Welton Iowa and met Margaret P., and was so thrilled to meet such a nice lady. There was also a contest for the characters and I took first place. It truly was Ozsome. Thanks for having the passion for the WOZ, as we do....

Letter To The Wizard: Donna, I would like to tell you how wonderful your site is. I LOVE the Wizard of Oz and have been a collector for years. I tried to buy a set of Dolls made by Johannes Zook, but all I could find was the Lion, Scarecrow, and Tinman. So I am missing Dorothy. If you know of anyone that has a Dorothy please let me know. I thought these were going to be my favorite dolls until I saw yours. I am so very excited to order your dolls and to have something made by a real Munchkin. Thank you so much for all that you have done and the time it took to create a wonderful site and real MunchkinMade items.

From The Pen Of A Projectionist:- "The Wizard of Oz" is one of the most entertaining motion pictures ever made in the history of the cinema. I remember seeing it when it was re-issued to the commercial cinemas when I was quite young. Little did I think that when I became Chief Relief Projectionist of the former Workmen's Hall Cinema, Morgan Street, Tredegar, South Wales, U.K. that I would screen this classic Metro Goldwyn Mayer motion picture. Despite the passing of time it still remained an entertaining, exciting piece of cinema history.

It not only has many pictures but is a word dense Website in that it gives you more bang for the buck. My Webmaster, Ivan Brillhart and I are going to be moving this site to a new domain soon and it is going to be bigger and better than ever. Keep an eye out for the new site kansasoz.com. It should be up later this month. It is going to be a combined site of information and Oz stuff for sale. Thanks again for writing and your high praise.

Hello, I am an avid Wizard of Oz fan and collector and thought I knew pretty much about all there was to know, but there is never to much to learn. Anyway, a friend of mine tried to tell me today that the reason that the Wizard of Oz was made was that there was a political reason behind it all. I was taken back, because I had never heard or read anything of such. And so I am wondering if you can enlighten me on this subject if this is so. Maybe you know what she is talking about.
Thanks much
~ozlady*

From Jeannie
July 26th, 2001

Dear Jeannie:

I have heard this rumor also but it just isn't so. The Wizard of Oz did not just appear in 1939. This story was owned by MGM for several years before the studio decided to make the film. But more importantly, the story was written by L. Frank Baum in Chicago in 1900. The story really goes further back than that as Mr. Baum was telling a good part of the finished story to his children's friends and neighbors as a way to entertain them. This was the first of a series of Oz books that continues to this day. Baum died in May of 1919 but the legacy lives on. Several writers who have taken up the Ozian pen have been accepted by the most stringent standards of those who love Oz. Even this year another Oz book is for sale. Oz was even a successful Broadway musical show and was on the road for 8 years.

What is my point? Which time in history is the Wizard of Oz supposed to be politically represented in this or any additional stories? The year 2000 was the 100th anniversary since the writing of the first book. A lot of political water has gone under the bridge since that time.

I remember when I was in college. One of my English composition classes tackled the book Lord of the Flies,
written by William Golding an English author. We then were each assigned a term paper on the book and it was our choice to pick from several categories the way we wanted to approach the book. They were; Sociology, Religion, Politics, Psychology, and several others. I am sure when William Golding wrote this book, and set about his task in writing, he did not stop to consider all these 'messages' in writing this riveting story. My professor told us that she wanted us to find every possibility within the book's pages. But she made it clear that it was to teach us to think for ourselves but she also made it clear that this was not the intention of the writer and she considered our task a form of mental masturbation. She said it would hone our thinking abilities but would not necessarily be what the author had intended. She believed that within any good story were all the human conditions that exist within society. That indeed was the hallmark of a great story when that human condition could be identified within a book. It allows us to sort of put on the book and wear it as a part of who we are. It is that very aspect that makes Oz the kind of story that children love and that adults love also as there is not a person that has not felt these messages in their own hearts and minds. The allegory in Oz is endless. But there were no deep dark political agenda's intended.

I believe that it is this kind of critical thinking that has lead to the stories about the political agenda that to some appear to be connected to the Wizard of Oz. People often love word games like crossword puzzles, anagrams, and decryption's using story allegory. It can be fun but we need to make sure that we do not credit the authors of stories with ideas that were never his or her intention.

May I suggest that if you want more information on the book that you go to the sites below and read what I have written there?

Thanks for writing to me and I hope this answers at least the specific question you asked. If you are interested in a really in-depth study of the book, pick up a copy of The Annotated Wizard of Oz by Michael Patrick Hearn. It is almost everything there is to know on L. Frank Baum and the Wizard of Oz.

The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum

The Wizard of Oz Book Releases

May I suggest to anyone who is really into the allegory of the Wizard of Oz that they also consult Jim's Wizard of Oz site and check out the following URL for deeper information on this topic. http://www.geocities.com/wizozfan/ozcritic.htm

Another excellent source of information on Oz can be had from the Baum Bugle which is put out by the International Wizard of Oz Club. In my book it is the final authority about this great story the Wizard of Oz.

Thanks for the question.

Letter To The Wizard: Wow, The Wizard of Oz is magnificent, but I had no idea Eleanor Keaton was a munchkin... is that what you're really saying? Which one was she? I knew she was a dancer at MGM but had no idea she was in such a classic! thanks.

From Syd

Dear Syd:

Eleanor Keaton was a tiny slip of a dancer and I do not know how to pick her out of the crowd. Maybe someone else does and I would be glad to hear from that person. Her husband Buster had also tried out for the Cowardly Lion but of course it was Burt Lahr that ended up in that role.

From Jonathon
May 6th, 2001

Dear Jonathon:

Thank you for the lovely note about Oz and your enjoyment of it. There are not very many Munchkins or other cast members still alive. But, there is one adorable lady in your state of Arizona. Her name is Margaret Pelligrini. Margaret is very active in the many festivities about Oz. She was on the cruise recently that you mentioned. Take heart Jonathon as Margaret will be on the Oz cruise this next March. You can check out the date of the cruise and who will be aboard the ship on my site under Calendar of Events. Don't get left out this time.

I know you are probably wanting her address but I cannot give that information out to anyone. The little people guard their privacy. If you want to write to her I will forward it to her. Send it to: Margaret Pelligrini, C/O Donna Stewart-Hardway, PO Box 777, Pinch, WV 25156-0777

May I also extend and invitation to you to attend the Chesterton. Indiana Oz festival? It is held every year and is the largest celebration of its type in the world. Last year there were 100,000 in attendance. Most of the Munchkins that are still able to attend the festivals are at this celebration. Do come, as I am sure you will have a wonderful time. You can eat with the cast members and talk to them until your heart is content. I hope to see you there. I am the Munchkin that is not vertically challenged. Again, the information is on my Web site under my Calendar of Events.

Happy Ozing,
Donna

As a child who grew up loving both the story and the film [and as an adult whose family says I still live in the land of OZ] your web site was a real treasure!

The reason I landed on it is that as a teacher at a magnet school for intellectually gifted kids [grades 2-12] in Sarasota, Florida ... I'm part of a team putting on the RSC version of the stage play this spring. I'm the theatre person, and the instrumental and vocal music teachers and I are doing a joint venture - and casting an all-grades group for the show starting Jan 18. I also teach computers, and one of the projects for the 4th graders is to do some on-line research about OZ in the weeks leading up to the production. Of particular interest are the munchkins ... they're the right age/size for this, and many of them will be trying out [there are 124 in the 4th grade!] We'll be adding pix's and info done by the 4th graders, as well as from the production on the school web site as we get going.

I'm interested in doing some sort of email contact with any of the original munckins who would be willing to do so ... I also will be contacting the Little People group in Sarasota ... as former Ringling Brothers headquarters, there is a large group here ... want to make the whole production a community "event" as much as possible.

Your site will the the first one I take my kids to - thanks for taking on this task ... and for making the memories come alive again.

PS - our principal has already "volunteered" to be the Wizard!

Your site is fantastic. It brings back so many happy memories for me. My daughter, now 35 years old, has been referred to as "the Second Coming of Judy." Not only did she have Judy's voice, she also played Dorothy three different times at our local Light Opera and Children's Musical Theaters. Our Dorothy, had many of the same post Oz problems that Judy did; however, we did keep her from committing suicide. I am an avid collector of Oz items and I give most of them to my daughter. She also loves your site. What a trip down memory lane. We truly thank you for all that you have done.

Answer: I thank you so much for sharing this information with me. I had to quit show biz too from a 'nervous breakdown' before age seven. I feel it was a blessing in disguise. Tell your daughter for me that I send my love and prayers for what she endured, as I know that it had to have been very painful.

Leaving show business out of the picture, there are some very healing lessons to be learned from the Oz story. It takes a lot of courage to come back from the brink-----

You may want to check out the book called, Golden Wisdom, Beyond the Emerald City, by Ilene Kimsey. You can find the review I wrote on this book on my site under newly released books. Great Book! I promise you it will help.

I was interested to find out if the rumor about the munchkin hanging himself in the movie was true? Are you familiar with this rumor and where is it in the movie?

Answer: Joe, thank you for writing to the Wizard. If you will look on my page titled, Did You Know . . you will find the answer to your question. The answer is a resounding NO! What is seen in the back ground is a Flamingo moving his wing. There were several flamingos used in the filming of Oz. I assure you that that did not happen and I was there.

Answer: April: Thank you for writing. In the original Lullaby League there were three "little people". They were Nita Krebs, Yvonne Moray Bistany, and Olga C. Nardone. Olga was in the middle and was one of the
smallest of the "little people". Olga is never seen at the Oz festivals but I understand that she is still alive.

I wish you the best of luck with your important part in the school play. Enjoy!
